Stories: SLOVENIA FLOODS 2023
On August 4, 2023, a powerful storm system moved over Slovenia causing torrential rain, major flooding, landslides and flash floods in at least two-thirds of the country. The raging water and debris have flooded cities, washed away villages, destroyed houses and roads, and cut whole cities from the rest of the world. Entire villages have been evacuated, many people remain displaced. Seven people lost their lives in the worst natural disaster to ever hit the country. That number could have been much higher, were it not for miraculous stories of survival. In the days following the disaster, several countries helped Slovenia with the clean-up. The estimated damage to 17.203 square kilometres of the country has since risen to 3 billion euros. Out of 212 municipalities in the country, 183 were affected.
